YouOS is a 'web operating system,' basically an OS-like desktop environment, complete with apps like a word processor, email and chat, that runs in your browser. Longtime gulker.com readers may remember the wonderful and wildly-ahead-of-its-time Workspot, a Linux desktop that runs in a browser. YouOS is a subset of Workspot, especially in its current alpha state, but shows great promise, given the rise of computing power and development environments like AJAX.
Like Workspot YouOS implements back-end services (many off-the-shelf and open source-based, according to srini, one of YouOS' developers), but it exposes AJAX, rather than Linux, APIs to developers who have offered some 800 apps, according to srini. There is a core stack of YouOS apps - chat, a rich-text editor (try it!), an installer and a Flickr RSS feed reader that tracks puppy pix (love 'em) among others.
YouOS probably, with a decent email client, would be all that some very large segment of computer users would ever need. The browser really is fast becoming the platform (alert: Safari not supported, Mac users - use Firefox). YouOS is to OSes what Hotmail was to email applications. Combine YouOS with Google's rapidly growing app suite (not exclusively, but as an option) and we may be seeing the future of computing...
