Funny, but this has been 'photo week' at gulker.com. Godson Nate's sister, Malea asked me to make a presentation on careers day to her 4th grade class. She didn't think much of 'high-tech strategist' - she wanted 'press photgrapher'. So I dug out my old cameras and prints (and modern digital camera and photo blog), and preso'd to the 4th grade. They were a tough crowd - more questions than a VC-laden board of directors.

The next day, a big commercial publisher emailed, and asked to use one of my old photos on the cover of a textbook, of all things. And today, we had yet another query... Malea seems to have gotten something rolling.

Anyway, I worked for daily newspapers and photo agencies for 18 years: the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, the San Francisco Examiner (the old Hearst-owned version), Gamma-Liaison and (best) Picture Group, the world's greatest, if shortest-lived, photo agency (subsequently became Saba, a legendary agency that was sold to Corbis).

Rendering above left is by Bill Schorr, ace editorial cartoonist at the Herex, aka the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. I seemed to be a model for 'press photographer' look-and-feel in those days. A Herex copy editor went on to be a writer for 'Lou Grant': many in the newsroom felt that I had been a model for 'Animal' the long-haired photog : here's a pic of calm, collected moi in that era. Multi-faceted? Or, just can't keep a job...?
