Organic light-emitting films might lead to a new class of tablet computer, with a roll-up screen, according to an article in Scientific American this month. But what will we be using these devices for? Reading 2D book pages?

Speaking of Gutenberg, here is page 1 of the Grenville Bible at the British Library. This is one of my favorite web sites: it provides high-resolution scans of a 550-year-old book. When you think about it, a half-millennium later, we don't really provide much that's different - rich text and illustrations - even given our (relatively) highly literate populations and ubiquitous computers and networks. My godchildren and young relatives are amazingly media-literate thanks to video games and MTV... why do we give books and pencils to kids who can easily assimilate - and create - much richer content?
