The Bush amendment is only the second in history that would restrict, rather than expand, the rights of citizens. The first banned alcohol sales, and was repealed. This is, I think (please correct me if you know of another) the first Constitutional amendment proposal ever that seeks to restrict the rights of a minority group in America. The Jim Crow laws were enacted only in Southern states and never made it into the Constitution...

Sorry day for America. Question to President Bush: how does denying marriage to 7% of Americans strengthen marriage? Was marriage stronger when laws restricted members of different races from marrying? How does the happiness of others 'weaken' marriage? The really sad thing here is that, as analysts at NBC and (I think) elsewhere are noting, the President's real goal is to get conservative, right-wing Christians to support his re-election bid. The rights of Americans, real flesh-and-blood Americans who work, raise families and pay their taxes are pretty clearly in 2nd place as far as this President is concerned...

No Guts, but plays man-with-guts on TV: Governor Schwarzenegger is independently wealthy. If he got dumped from office tomorrow, his life would be spent on palatial estates. Gavin Newsom isn't wealthy, and if he got dumped, he'd be out looking for a job. There's no question in my mind which of these 2 guys has greater moral courage. Schwarzenegger telling the Republican convention what they wanted to hear on the topic of prejudice against gays and lesbians doesn't take much moral courage, does it? And what was this lie on national TV when he claimed there were riots happening over gay marriage? What is it about Republican leaders and the truth, anyway? The 'riots' were as real as President Bush's WMD...

Real Guts: Gavin Newsom has so far gained the enmity of his party, his faith and roughly half the American population, not to mention the strange people over on the Right. My spouse was pondering that this morning as we headed out in to the morning rain for our jog: ever distrustful of politicians, she wondered what could possibly be the benefit of his standing up for a small minority (even in San Francisco County, gay and lesbian people are a minority)? I wonder if he's just one of those wonderful Americans who just does the right thing when the time is right...
