Dotcom Garden is a project whose goal is to make a small, highly productive garden that can easily be managed by a busy person. Read the full story.

Key features and benefits:
  • Intensive, organic method allows high production in a very small space
  • Automated drip irrigation for easy maintenance, steady plant growth
  • Produce includes heirloom and other hard-to-find or expensive varieties
  • Garden next to house makes it easy to eat healthy, even without WebVan
  • Crop rotation keeps the garden almost continuously productive
  • Low cost in time, money, other resources
The technology:
  • French intensive (or should we say 'Freedom Intensive'this year?) gardening method
  • Garden server, network and telemetry
  • Wireless (Wi-Fi) Web cam for 'virtual serenity' (being worked on at the moment)

The garden consists of 8 3x3 foot containers and a handful of pots, filled 18 inches deep with a rich organic soil mix. This allows plants to be placed very close, with the thinings going to table to allow others to mature. Quick growing crops are interspesed with slower growing ones, and plants are rotated to keep the planters full and productive.

The garden's technology currently consists of a Mac OS X server home page, with plans for automated telemetry, irrigation control and possibly other 'interesting' projects.
