Dotcom Garden technology
The P3 Linux server-to-be, the 2400 and Web cam in action, the Cam w/high-tech 'tripod'. Dotcom Garden will eventually have a Web cam, a Web server, soil moisture and temperature telemetry and maybe some other interesting technologies, like a different haiku everytime the garden cam 'virtual serenity' page is loaded. At the moment, a Macintosh PowerBook 2400 (with a Newer Tech G3 upgrade) is running the cam, a Connectix (now Logitech) Color QuickCam (ADB port), and saving a still image every 5 minutes to the Web server via an AppleShare IP connection over 802.11b. The signal strength at the 2400 is iffy, and the 2400 looses the connection frequently. We may try using Oculus shareware with FTP to get around the low signal strength, or, alternately relocate the 802.11b AirPort hub. Eventually, though, we'll be configureing a bookshelf-sized Pentium 3 machine running Linux to handle the garden. It will run Web cam, web server and hopefully monitor soil tensiometers, control irrigation valves etc. |
