The Switch, the Bumps…
Much has gone smoothly, and it’s easy to like WordPress’ features. One thing we haven’t solved is forwarding the RSS feed from gulker.com’s old Radio software (http://www.gulker.com/rss.xml) to WordPress’ feed (http://www.gulker.com/feed/rss2). We’ve tried two methods: remapping rss.xml to /feed/rss2 via hacking Apache’s .htaccess file, and using a WordPress plugin, Feed Director. Neither has worked, […]
Web archeology
While attempting to put some nav on the previous incranation of www.gulker.com, we’ve tripped over some much older past incarnations of the blog- an amusing trip into the ‘ancient’ roots of gulker.com.
I think I still have the hard drives (if not the technology - e.g. old SCSI ports) to resurrect some, if not all […]
Hello world…
First morning of the new blog: already we have a few notes from readers. Charles offers an anti-spam tip, Barb wonders if link colors can be adjusted to suit older eyes (but, who’s aging?). Eugene can’t find my email address.
Today’s task will be getting the Feed Director plug-in working, so users who are subscribed to […]
gulker.com’s new look
Welcome to the the new look www.gulker.com blog. After more than 4 years on the old blue-and-white theme, we’ve decided to make a change. And more than the look and feel has changed.
We’ve also moved from the venerable, ahead-of-its-time (but, now, no longer actively developed) Radio Userland to the very nice open source WordPress. If […]
The birthday dinner
Friend Cathy Podell’s birthday dinner seemed to go well, 100+ degree heat notwithstanding. Barb’s empanadas and black bean soup were ‘killer’ (I ate 4 empanadas), and the Cuban pork and Sea Bass were well received. Well worth the effort, heat and all…
Archive of www.gulker.com January 2002 - July 2006
Archive of www.gulker.com’s blog from January 2002 to July 2006 is now live. It provides a quicker way to go from month to month and year to year, than the calendar navigation in the sidebar. Most of these pages are in Google’s index, and can be found with our Google site search. One step closer […]
It’s hot again today, hotter than two days ago, and where does this scorching day find me? On the patio? At the beach? Nope. Been in the kitchen, roasting pork.
Today is the birthday of my spouse’s best friend, and friend Barb Slaton and I are cooking dinner for 8. Barb thought it would be fun […]
New bug
If I paste html with links into WordPress’ editor, the links fail on IE and Firefox on Windows. Links made by wordPress either automatically or using its link tool, work. WordPress converts pasted ‘href‘ to ‘xhref‘ for some reason, looking at source. Will investigate this PM…
Debugging
Debugging has begun in earnest on the new site and blogging system. Last night we found a bug that showed up only in FireFox, and figured out a fix. We also figured out how to convert the HTML blogroll to OPML, using BBEdit and the time honored search-and-replace feature. Now that the blogroll has been […]
Bug ‘fixed’
So, we’re diving into the usual serial problem solving routine so often useful in solving complicated technologies (and web pages are way too complicated).
The vertical picture table started breaking in FireFox when we turned on the new blogroll. So we turned it off. Picture table still broke.
We tried putting text in both columns. Worked. Hmm.
Put […]
