Tough job, but somebody had to do it

Over the course of my career at L.A. Herald Examiner, I became more and more interested in feature work, including fashion illustration. I read everything I could find about studio lighting, and I used to hang out at Irena’s P.R.S - the rental service for L.A. photogs, and chat with rising stars about how to light.
I’d also hawk assignments to shoot prominent photographers like Richard Avedon and Dick Zimmerman, and check out the set ups in their studios when possible. Some of my peers wondered why I would shoot food and jewelry and authors, when you could be out chasing fire engines and cop cars, but I liked being able to visualize the picture and work with the subject, light and shadow, focal length et al. to create the final image.
On the one hand I had to drag lights around and deal with publicists: on the other hand I got to shoot the annual swim suit illustrations. Another 11×14 print scanned on the new Mustek A3. Every dog, and photog, has his day…
