The new Mac Pro arrives, with a peek at Leopard

The amazing thing about the new Mac Pro is the interior layout. As Jason Snell points out over at Macworld, when you take the PowerPC chips’ massive heat sinks, 9-fan array and liquid cooling system out of the box, there is a heck of a lot more room for stuff like hard drives and DVD burners. The hard drive array (it holds up to four, vs. the two that just barely fit in my dual-processor G5) is particularly neat, and is reminiscent of the Xserve’s front-mounted drives.
Leopard, with it’s built-in ‘Time Machine‘ backup looks interesting, but I think there’s more to come. I’m guessing that the need to build - and debug - two separate code bases is going to slow down the pace of Mac OS at least a little. But with Microsoft taking 5 years between releases, reminiscent of Apple in the early 90s, Apple should remain the innovation leader in the commercial OS space (though it will be very interesting to see what the Linux distros do in the next 12 months or so). We will be sticking with our PowerPC machine for the forseeable future…

I dunno: haven’t they been building and debugging on PowerPC and x86 the whole time?
I’m frightened about Time Machine eating up all my hard drive space.
