A walk in the Arastradero Preserve

A walk in Arastradero PreserveWe’ve been walking here for the 17 years we’ve lived in Northern California. Palo Alto’s Enid W. Pearson Arastradero Preserve has 10.25 miles of trails tucked into its 609 acres of savannah and broadleaf evergreen forest. I took my Leica, set for black & white and the new RCA digital voice recorder. As we walked up the approximate 500 foot rise from the smaller of the park’s 2 parking lots, I recorded my thoughts while puffing up the slope: here they are as a podcast.

Cassie and Linda met a couple of friendly bicyclists on a fire road near the heart of the park, seen here. We also met another Australian Shepherd, about Cassie’s age, whose owner swore by accupuncture as a cure for arthritis. I don’t think we’ll be podcasting regularly: this is only the second ever on gulker.com… it’s not like I need something else to do

. . . enjoyed your podcast - it worked well. But that 8am opening must challenge dawn joggers.

Just as an aside, Alex raced in the Short and Fat Chequamagon mt. bike race a couple weeks ago (third in age group, 35/800+ overall), at Telemark Lodge near Cable, WI. We stayed at a close-to-perfect cabin, Two Suns, on Lake Knotting. It’s a private lake with a tiny island, no motors allowed, big fire-pit, over-sized picnic table, rowboat, real cozy. First 6am morning, three of an otter family swimming and diving just offshore, kingfishers, and a bald eagle. Second morning, a loon. Highly recommended. Porcupine Lake Wilderness just to the north, but there are recent reports of wolves killing bear hunting dogs, so post bug-killing early frost, late-summer, early-fall, winter, or spring may be best to avoid the hunting crowd.

Sounds really nice… congrats to Alex, though I don’t think of him as short or fat…

Short because it’s 16mi instead of 40mi, fat because of mt bikes’ slang as fat tire-d. If he gets around to reading your blog, he’ll get a laugh out of this exchange.
