Moon over Hoover Tower

Full moon over Hoover TowerStanford’s Hoover Tower was glowing faintly in the sunrise this morning, with a full moon floating picturesquely above. An airplane is caught winging through the upper left corner.

I stopped on our jog, and steadied the Pentax Optio-X on a light pole to get this 1/8 second exposure (at f2.6) with minimal shake. The lens was zoomed to 5.8mm, the eqivalent of a 35mm wideangle on a 35mm format. Our Lumix FX-9, still in the shop after Linda tumbled down a sandy slope with camera in hand, has an image stabilizer built in.

The image quality possible with these tiny cameras is impressive, though I’m not sure they are built to take the rigors of daily use. The Pentax has been in the shop twice

Lovely photo . . . crop the sidewalk lighting and it approaches frameable.

Remarkable how airplanes in silhouette against the sky pointed toward objects seem now to invoke a pang of paranoia - in this case nonsensically, being as its the moon.

How does one do the conversion between old 35mm lens lengths and the new digital ones? I’m always confused.

It works by comparing the diagonal of the image format to the focal length… let me see if I can find/figure out the formula…
