Moon and mist greet the dawn

Lagunita, the oft-dry pond at Stanford, is sometimes graced, on cool mornings, by a low mist, 3 feet or so deep, that snuggles in the basin. That was the case this AM, as Linda, Cassie and I made our way, close to sunrise. A tiny crescent moon added to the charm, hovering over the eastern glow. Yet another reason to rise at 6:00…

What a great photo . . . you really captured what I imagine is spectrum banding caused by the atmospheric lens - do you know more about that? I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that before.
Is Lagunita one of those obnoxious drainage ponds (cesspools) that takes the runoff from parking lots? Around here, they are an excuse for replacing ancient wetlands filled for sloppy development.
The moon seems a little small in relation to ground objects compared to what I see around here . . . I don’t recall whether it is waning or waxing, but maybe tomorrow it will appear larger at dawn due to atmosphere.
. . . and those lights in the left mid-ground. Shouldn’t they be turned off to save juice?
Please keep up these great photos.
Thanks. The photos are a fun, distracting activity… I think the small moon is a result of focal length. This was shot with the equivalent of 28-mm lens on 35-mm format. Camera is actually a Pentax Optio-X digital camera, 5 MP, w/5.8mm - 17.4mm zoom. I really like this little camera…
