The essays advance… a little
The labor in 21st century essay advanced a bit today on the train up to the city. Still needs a lot of work. I also finished, for time being, researching the faith essay (I finished Wired’s recent article on faith and the new atheism). I’m also rewatching films about faith, mostly Sci Fi: Contact, Titan […]
The left side rebounds
I was worried about the left side the other day: we seemed to be losing coordination a bit more rapidly than has been the case over the last few months. I discussed this with Dr. Larsen at UCSF: his guess, given the rapid nature of the event, was that the steroids I’d been given to […]
My dog needs new shoes
Spotted at 4th and King while I waited for the N Judah. This roadside mendicant’s sign reads ‘Doggie needs new shoes.’ Got to love a sense of humor, come whatever, but, um, maybe we could work on getting doggie, and master, a new home?
Essay delay
The essay I promised on labor in the 21st century is delayed, apologies. My laptop, which I’d left on ’sleep’ all weekend, died on the second graf on the train. When I got home, some new effect of radiation and chemo knocked me down…
A noontime tableau on the N Judah
Fellow riders on the N Judah today, shortly after noon. The train was moving between the underground Market St. stations - Powell, Montgomery, Embarcadero. Makes a nice tableau…
All quiet on the LAN front
Sitting here tonight, mindlessly noodling with our internal private network, I note how quiet things are. This is hardly like the time bonez, the hacker slithered into my Linux box (formerly the LAN firewall) resulting, a few weeks later, in a call from the FBI. And that wasn’t the only hack.
There was also the […]
Cooking again: the left side concern
Cooked last night for the first time in weeks. Friends know that amateur chef, moi, (and that’s trés, trés amateur chef) likes to cook. The largesse of our friends and faith community has kept us amazingly well fed these past couple weeks. So last night’s menu was grilled, Prime N.Y. Steak in a salt-and-pepper crust with […]
Jobs, presses and the future of labor
The L.A. Times Pressman’s blog has linked to my note about the Chron outsourcing its printing starting in 2009. I didn’t touch on the topic of jobs in my earlier post. It’s a hard issue, and I have some hard experience with same. It’s close to bedtime for me - my chemo regimen starts one […]
Chemo day 2: luck still holding…
No nausea, so far. Also seem to be tolerating the higher levels of the new anti-convulsant Lyrica, without undue side effects. Seizures are very mild, and appear to be decreasing - fewest seizures I’ve had in weeks last night. Sleep very welcome… feel like I’m getting back to my normal self…
Chron to outsource printing of paper starting in 2009
Interesting… not that this isn’t common in Europe (including papers with much larger circulations), because a printer with a number of clients can keep the presses rolling 24 hours a day with jobs from multiple clients, thus amortizing costs more efficiently. Since Transcontinental is building a new plant, it will be state of the art […]
