A visit from the ‘artiste’

MRI Superman

David Perry 180 pixFriend, Episcopal priest David Perry dropped in today. David’s down from Portland visiting family in San Francisco for the holidays: I’m sure he had a thousand things to do, but being David, he drove down and spent part of his afternoon with me. We had a great time catching up.

David is the author of the ‘rubber stamp ministry,’ which has been an wonderful source of strength and cheer these past couple months. David and I have stayed in touch from a distance since our days at All Saints in Pasadena, where David directed family ministries, lo these 25 years.

David went on to big things at the national church office: I visited him and wife Ricki a couple of times in NYC, but we haven’t connected in person recently, life and time constraints being what they are as we’ve jumped into the new millennium.

Suddenly, when word of current events reached now-retired David, he was back in my life with frequent, much-enjoyed communiques. David is analog, not a computer guy: he reads my blog then responds with oeuvres (as seen above in response to the MRI post below) on nice, folded note cards in buff envelopes. He also found an amusing psalm, warning one against ‘bucklers’ (a reference to swords, he thought) that seemed appropriate to post by the MRI machine. Note to secular friends: in a world without faith, where would a David Perry come from…?

Could there ever be a world without faith? My guess that would also be a world without history . . . just another fantasy speculation. The secularists among us I hope have enough grounding to speak truth to power while not counting on much of the world to turn themselves upside down as a result.

As long as there is less ‘rubber-stamp’ thinking aka dittoheads . . .

[…] My new heart: sweet spouse Linda gave me and dear friend, priest David Perry new hearts when we met for lunch near UCSF Cancer Center Wednesday. She then retreated to a table across the room so I could talk to David: I wanted his counsel on forgiveness, and letting go of a poisoned situation. David’s counsel, as usual, was excellent and well-considered. He’s sending me Bishop’ Tutu’s book about the forgiveness process in South Africa… […]

[…] Only a friend of David Perry would be unsurprised to receive a Pope Innocent III action figure in the mail. David and I frequently correspond on the subject of Pope Benedict XVI, and somehow David thought injecting Pope Innocent III into the conversation would be a good idea. […]
