Santa Fe was bright and cold this morning as we made our way a few blocks from the hotel to the central plaza where merchants were lining up, pitching blankets and putting their wares on display. Silver, turquoise, ceramics and hand-made tiles abounded.
Sitting on a bench, I met my first two Santa Fe acquaintances, an ox-drover (left) and a photographer (right). We chatted briefly, and I was shown pictures of Bill and Bob, the oxen, and the elaborate alfalfa and apples ‘cake’ that had recently been presented to same.
All of us are feeling the altitude walking today on the plaza, and it’s a first time experience for Julie, who has nevertheless soldiered on, cheered a bit, I think, when I discovered a nearby Starbucks where she could get her favorite tea drink.
I found a very nice pair of new moosehide shoes, that will become my dry-day back-to-work commute shoes in the New Year. Julie found earings, John discovered an interesting Day-of-the-Dead tile in a tin frame, while Linda came up with a small, elegant cloth purse: together we discovered a beautiful, Southwestern-styled ceramic creche set. Linda and I rarely shop while traveling: this was a banner day…
