The ‘duality’ of gulker.com

David Perry's rubber-stamp monkey puts it so eloquently

Friend David Perry’s most recent amusing missive makes a point graphically and eloquently that I have heard from others - friends, family, members of our faith community - and that is that gulker.com, has, well, this peculiar nature. Call it a ‘duality.’

We have written about a wonderful Christmas trip to Santa Fe and Taos, about our recent travails et al., largely in terms that most could at least comprehend in some fashion. And, then, of a sudden, comes a post with verbiage like ‘The new LAN was ‘officially’ installed tonight, complete with new, more secure firewall and WiFi, a guest ’sandbox’ LAN and a few more new features.’ I can imagine the eyes rolling in any number of heads, good and faithful people all.

Before the brain made its current state known, gulker.com, while it ranged here and there from time to time, was really a geek blog. We wrote a lot about technology, power laws, networks, software, hardware, imaging technology and things even more arcane (physics, anyone?). So, now that a little normalcy is returning to my life, the geek stuff is just naturally following along.

Lately we’ve written about our new LAN, or local area network, which I built out after spending 6 weeks under linear accelerators and ensconced in MRI machines with little to do but thought exercises (no DVD player in your late-model GE Spectra 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine, it turns out). It’s kind of cool, for a home-built thing, and I used some of the principles Google uses in its data centers to get to a fast stable LAN that will support what I think will be useful and amusing services. Anyway, apologies to those whose heads ache at the mere mention of an acronym

You’d *better* write some tech stuff… I nominated you for the ‘lifetime achievement’ award in the Bloggies - I figure ’serving since 1995′ and the iconic story about how gulker.com was first set up qualify - so you need to look clever for when the judges arrive ;o)
