A very happy Linda…

Linda and Willie McCovey at Tapa s and Wine, in Palo AltoSo, tonight, I took the early ‘baby bullet’ from San Jose to Palo Alto so Linda could pick me up and begin to work through a list of looming errands: blood work, chemo prescriptions, ‘haircut’ (or buzz) and ordering a new, healthy mattress for our new bedroom furniture (which arrives Friday) among other things.

As luck would have it, all that we could do was done by about 5:15, and the restaurant we were hoping to have a quick bite at wasn’t open yet. So, husband made an ‘audible’ on the sidewalk, and opted to try Tapas and Wine, a Palo Alto wine bar on Emerson that offers small plates and a list of not-the-usual-suspect wines. We were happily making our way through wine flights (I’m in a chemo ‘off’ week) and plates of ceviche, hamachi, very light green bean tempura et al. when in should walk no other than one Mr. Willie McCovey, and seat himself at the table next to us with 3 friends.

Linda almost died. True black-and-orange Giant fan she could not believe the legend himself was sitting mere feet from her, indeed, at the table right next to ours, in a quiet restaurant, early on a Wednesday night.

I can only imagine it was the stress of the past few months that dispatched Linda, politely, and before the waiter had so much as approached his table, to walk over and introduce herself (and this is not the first time Linda has seen Mr. McCovey in a local eatery). Seeing this, and having the new Lumix on my shoulder, I did what any dutiful husband had to do: ‘Mr. McCovey, would it be inaprpropriate to ask you for a photo with my wife?’ I gotta say, for a guy who I was interupting at his dinner, Willie was as gracious and classy as a guy could be. Would you say Linda looks excited and happy…?
