Bright sky, long shadows on a 24-degree morning in Meno Park

Garden 'telemetry': 24 degrees right here in California...!As temperatures in Northern California have dipped to ten-year lows. our trusty, 54-year old furnace, an old-fashioned sheetmetal and cast-iron ‘upside down’ forced-air model popular in the 50s, has decided to fail.

Despite religious filter change and annual oiling of the motor, said motor failed last night shortly after Linda got home from a full-day vestry retreat. She had hoped to collapse and relax after 2 very full days: intead we had a PG&E firedrill, emergency heat repair service fire drill and a frantic run to Fry’s to buy space heaters (at least they had some).

So, now were in warm clothes, trying to keep zones like the family room and bathrooms warm. Cassie and I did our 2.5 mile circuit, spotting the scene above near the house, while Linda jogged 90 minutes through the Academic preserve, snapping photos of iced-over culverts and heavy frost everywhere. Starting to wonder when the Gulker family is going to catch a tiny little break….

[…] No reference to a certain Republican, not much loved hereabouts. I navigated up to UCSF on public transport, underwent chemo infusion, came home, arranged for a new furnace (ours has broken again), hauled out 6 bins of recycling (and brought ‘em back in) did the mail, worked through a long to-do list, cooked dinner and did the dishes. I am ready for bed… chemo crash/fog notwithstanding… […]
