As if we had needed more stuff in our life, my cancer news came just as we were in the middle of remodelling the master bedroom and bath – add contractors and deadlines and decisions that could be expensive if you get them wrong – to the mix of hospitals, waiting rooms and therapy schedules. The remodel has proceeded nevertheless, with health-caused delays, waiting for back orders, the inevitable (it seems) screw ups that necessitate rethinking things (lighting sconces in our case) and attendant negotiations about who pays for what.
But, we’re very nearly done! When the bedroom bath and closet had progressed to the painted stage, dear spouse Linda rented a bed so we could get off the guestroom futon-sofa that we’ve been using in the interim. The beautiful new hand-made bedroom furniture Linda had ordered from a New England cabinet maker, was still a month or more from being shipped.
The new bed and bedside tables came last week, at which point we ordered the custom mattress, which in turn arrived Saturday. An afternoon at Bed, Bath and Beyond produced sheets, towels pillows and a comforter, and, as of last night, we’re in the most comfortable (and certainly the nicest) bed I’ve ever slept in. We’ve always had hand me-down furniture (not that it wasn’t nice hand-me-downs), but as Linda said when she ordered the new stuff, how old do you have to be before you can buy stuff that you want…?
