Myaor Gavin Newsom with friend, event co-chair Cathy Podell at UCSF's Raising Hope 2007

mike_kathy_b_raising_hope_3001.jpgUCSF’s Raising Hope fund raiser was held last night, and as has been the case for the last couple years, good friends Mike and Cathy Podell invited us to join them at their table. Cathy is co-chair of the event, and brings an amazing amount of energy, work and fund-raising and event-planning know-how to this gala.

Last night’s edition was particularly glamorous - featuring a warm and mysterious red-draped tent (setting by Stanlee Gatti), an appearance at our table by Mayor Gavin Newsom, pictured above with Cathy (and Gavin’s in some hot water, it would seem). Bette Midler provided the entertainment (wow!) and I had a great time walking around with the Lumix snapping pix of our friends (that’s Mike Podell with Kathy Baruh, above, left).

Clearly, the Gulker family is committed to the work of the wonderful people at UCSF, particularly the neuro-oncology program. Cathy didn’t need to twist our arm to double our contribution this year, which I think we will be continuing for the forseeable future. I had a great time… the food was very good for a big event, a filet mignon/short rib hash with vegetables in a very good wine reduction

[…] So, I’m going to be unapologetic about donning a tuxedo and supporting UCSF’s Rasing Hope fund raiser. Some of my Valley friends who make a point of not owning a tuxedo (or a suit, or matching socks for that matter) have been ribbing me about attending Raising Hope. Sometimes, a guy has to do what a guy has to do, and supporting the incredible people at UCSF who have been helping me deal with my brain issues is something I strongly feel I have to do, tuxedo and all (and I don’t even look good in a tuxedo). I felt very fortunate even to be invitedto the event. L to R Jacob, Terye and Josh Levy, Linda Hubbard Gulker, moi, Lauren Levy and John Getze at Raising Hope Weds. evening… […]

    Dear Mr. Gulker,

This is an odd forum to approach you in, but Cathy gave me the address for your site and I wasn’t sure how else to find you. In my capacity as senior director of development for the Cancer Center, I tried to keep up with Cathy and Nanci as they created the fabulous evening you pay tribute to here. At one point, just after Bette concluded, I came to check on Cathy. We had a big hug and exchanged some conversation. I believe you may have snapped a few photos of Cathy and me. If you still have them, I’d love to see one or two. I’d be happy to give you a description so you might find the picture more easily (I’m certain she hugged lots of folks that night!) or I’m also happy to prowl through the shots and see if I can find it myself. Whatever is easiest for you, I would very much like to have a photo of that moment. Thank you.

Sure, Ann. Can you describe yourself? What were you wearing? I’ll look through the pix.

I’ll try to get in touch with you via Cathy….
