Corbis, Getty and photojournalism

NYT has an article today about Corbis, the photo agency Bill Gates started when he imagined people would want pictures to fill the giant LCD and plasma screens that would take the place of conventional pictures on the wall. Corbis has become, together with lartger competitor Getty, a massive rights management business that has, along [...]

Balancing act

Turns out that it’s a bit tricky hitting the balance between edema, or brain swelling, an artifact of radiation therapy which results in the partial paralysis of my left side, and steroid dose, which shrinks the edema, but causes weakness in big muscles, like the ones in my legs.
Yesterday I had the mix balanced about [...]

YEP bumps up a couple revs.

Ted Leckle sent us a note about the 1.5 rev of YEP, which we have since installed. We now have 1400 documents in a 1.4 GB Yep database. When I’m conscientous about scanning things in, Yep (via Spotlight) can find just about anything. It’s a great “Get Things Done‘ inbox. I don’t worry about losing [...]

The Pope, secularism and a world racked by violence

I have had a hard time with Pope Benedict XVI, formerly Joseph, Cardinal Ratzinger. As Cardinal Ratzinger, head of Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, (aka the Inquisition in times past), he produced an encyclical on homosexuality that was one of the most un-Christian documents I’ve read in recent history. As Pope, at least [...]

Easter dinner fun

Friends Mike and Cathy brought a Steif bunny to Easter dinner, along with a little outfit - grandchild’s first presents. We had a lot of fun after the 5 PM Easter service at Trinity… 2 fun evenings in a row with John and Julie…

Jersey Boys

We took daughter-in-law Julie to see Jersey Boys last night as a birthday present. After an early dinner at quintessential San Francisco hangout Anjou, we made our way to the Curran Theatre. I think the evening was a hit - Julie seemed to enjoy the show, as did Linda and John.
The edema meant I needed [...]

The good things about edema

Are that I was moving slowly in the garden this AM, cleaning up after Cassie And noodling around, which allowed me to notice and figure out a valve combination that restores the long-dormant waterlines in my planter boxes. Woo hoo. This will save daily waterings, or, more precisely walking out to do daily waterings.
Now I need [...]

Meanwhile, back East

Friend Leslie Graham emailed some pix of current weather in Ohio (she lives in Hudson, south of Cleveland). Temperature for Indians opener today was 36 degrees: there were 4 snow delays in the first 4 innings. Brrrr…

Steroids down, edema up

Well, no doubt about it. As we ramp the steroids way down, the edema - brain swelling - ramps up. At today’s very low (comparatively) steroid dose, I can only just barely walk. So the devil’s dilemma is ramp back up, but then live with increased weakness of my large muscles, and a longer rehab. [...]

When your dog is doing better than you are

So, Cassie and I made our way around our .6 mile loop this AM. Thanks to edema et al. I am hobbling pretty badly, with a real wobbly gate, to say the least, despite using a walking stick.
Cassie, at 13, is making the tour considerably more gracefully: it’s a little bit of a consternation to [...]
