The Digilux II fails

Our Leica Digilux II was quietly taking pictures like the one above (that’s Linda with her dad) until tonight. When my mobility et al. went south a couple weeks ago, I used the ‘opportunity’ to do house things like tuck cameras away (the Digilux II has a spiffy new hard case for a home).
Linda’s at the ball game tonight, so I was going through the cameras, getting them ready for my (hoped-for, soon) return to hiking. When the Leica Digilux II came out, imagine my disappointment when it’s first snap was the ‘photo’ at left.
Turns out Sony sensors manufactured during a certain period, are prone to fail. Why a couple week’s storage would cause the sensor to fail, is a little curious. At least this press release offers hope that I may be off the hook for a giant Leica repair bill.
We don’t seem to be having a lot of luck with stuff like this lately. Linda’s had 2 flats on her Lexus in the past month, and somebody backed into our Ford Hybrid at Draeger’s…

[...] For the last couple of weeks I’d have been in bed already: but maybe our our stamina is back a bit this week, too. We’re past the fatigue ‘trough’ that usually hits about 3 days after chemo (anemia maxes out about then, too). So I brought out the cameras again, in particular the Leica M8 and it’s awesome Metze flash, which came 2 months ago, but I haven’t had time to play with. the M8 is working fine, unlike the Digilux II, which will soon be headed to Leica repair. [...] The morning sun made a neighbor’s yard interesting as Cassie and I made our half-mile A.M. spin. We’re leaving for France on Friday, so there’s much to do on top of the usual stuff, so we all got right up and out on our respective trails. Work will be busy today, as well. I’m hoping to get the Leica DLII repaired while I’m gone, so I’m trying to figure out the logistics of getting me (and the camera, in its hard shipping case) to the service desk at Adobe. We may need to take a cab in San Jose this AM… [...]
[...] After a phone call to Leica USA repair, during which I actually talked to someone who was on top of things, it seems Leica has received a shipment of new Sony image sensors, and my D-2, which has languished in New Jersey for 5 months, will be repaired and returned this week.Leica offered to upgrade me to a Digilux 3 for $950 as an option, but a. I didn’t think parting with another thousand bucks was a particularly good solution, and I really love the D-2s black and white mode - no way to know if the D-3 is as good. About time… 5 months doesn’t seem a reasonable amount of time to be denied use of an expensive camera… [...]
[...] Finally! Leica was kind enough to Fedex the Leica Digilux 2 after getting a new sensor from Sony to replace the failed one. Just in time… we’ll be riding the N Judah again, on our way to physical therapy at UCSF… [...]
