Rough night

One of the miserable things about cancer is the variability - just when you get in a groove of coping, something changes and knocks you out of kilter. Even with our meds hacking - which has made for a bit rougher week (and it’s a particularly full one at work, at that) we’ve been doing reasonably well, coping with fatigue and side effects, and making our way.

But then we have a night like this past one - leg cramps, frequent (steroid-caused?) peeing and some other unpleasantness - basically up and down every hour, if not a couple times an hour, all night. Yuk. Not easy on spouse, either… See comments below about the Well Spouse Association

    Chris:

You said, “Not easy on the spouse, either.” In the 29 years I lived with my first wife and her chronic illness — which ended up with 2 1/2 years of liver cancer, I was up many times in the night, tending to her needs because of illness symptoms.

I’m the President of the Well Spouse Association, a snon-profit, 501(c)(3) support org. for spouses or partners of people with chronic illness and/or disability. Cancer is increasingly becoming a chronic illness — witness Elizabeth Edwards and Tony Snow, recently in the news.

I wish you the best, I know whereof I speak, it’s difficult being the well spouse of an ill spouse, sometimes you just feel so helpless. Our organization offers peer support and helps members to attain a more balanced life, in the face of the sometimes totally bizarre conditions living with a chronic illness can create for a married couple.

Thank you for the note and pointer. I would love to find help for my spouse - this whole ordeal has been worse for her than me…. I agree that things can get bizarre, even between life mates of 25 years….
