New garden perch

Maddalena Sauvignon BlancSo we dragged ourselves off the 5:46 CalTrain last night after a full (and bit longer) day at work. Yup, we were tired, exhausted, really, but that’s not entirely a bad thing - I did get one project done that’s been ‘hovering’, and advance on a number other fronts. We had promised spouse grilled salmon, braised baby carrots and a salad for dinner after she was done with appointments, which meant we had an hour to kill.

So we did a little gardening (put the last of the yellow wax beans in), and then retired to our new ‘perch,’ pictured above, with a glass of wine. I won’t make excuses for my verre du vin on a Tuesday night: it’s been busier and a bit more stressful than usual this week, and this vintage, a Maddalena Sauvignon Blanc was a welcome accompaniment to the evening.

Friend, winemaker Anthony Riboli sent me the Maddalena along with his excellent San Simeon Pinot Gris when he found out that one of the chemo side effects was to completely wreck the taste of red wines. Anyway, sitting in the garden (it was cool and quiet with a gentle breeze) was very pleasant - just the sort of moment I was hoping for when we put this year’s garden in. The gift of Anthony’s wines has been truly appreciated, and enjoyed with a number of meals recently….

[…] I did, late in the afternoon, take 15 minutes to sit in the Garden, which I am making a priority. The Garden is one of the few components of my crazed chemo and steroid and anti-convulsant-moderated life where I feel I have some modicum of control, order and peace. I did the same thing early this morning, spending 10 minutes with a cup of Peet’s coffee while I watered. In the PM I just sat and looked at how big the lemon cucumbers have grown this week. […]
