The weekend wrap

Yesterday, sweet daughter-in-law Julie stoppred on her way home from work and took me on a Trader Joe’s run (TJs being a very favorite store). Many delicacies came home. Indeed, previously, spouse Linda had brought ingredients for a Friday night dinner (she had a church affair to attend) of sausages and peppers.
It so happens that I love peppers - red, green, bell, Anaheim - you name it, - and Linda does not. Even the odor of their cooking puts her off, so I’m limited in my pepper access as it were. But last night, with a full pantry and lots of tips for preparation from the France trip, we had a balll. Instead of the usual sautee in Olive Oil, last night’s dish was braised - with tomatoes and onions - in half a bottle of TJ’s ‘2-buck Chuck’ (Charles Shaw Cabernet Sauvignon) which is an excellent cooking wine IMHO. The result was a lighter, fresher-tasting dish, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
This morning we were up early - Linda to jog before a church vestry retreat, me to make omelettes - and get a little gardening done. TJs sells basil plants for $3, and I find that tucking 2 into the garden gives me a summer’s worth of renewable basil. There are lots of fresh tomato-and-basil tastes at Paris’ eateries this Spring…
