LAN chores: shopping for a new OS, upgrading NAS

We’re probably going to un-retire our 64-bit AMD machine this weekend. I’m digging around trying to figure out how to tuck it unobtrusively into gulker.com world HQ which is starting to sprout gear again as we’re ramping up a couple of projects. We had previously pruned much cruft from World HQ, and don’t want to go back to a cluttered workspace.

The AMD machine has Linux on it - haven’t booted it yet, and I can’t remember what’s installed. Shopping around for a new OS, I note that Vista (Home Premium) costs $215, Fedora Core 7 x86-64 is $9.95 from Linux Central, and I might be able to download SuSE 10.2 for free with a little luck and patience this PM.

I kind of feel like I need to have a Vista license (we already own XP), but not really sure why. I won’t run it very often, and the AMD will normally run Linux and be our Google/apps/docs machine I think. I’m very interested in seeing how Linux has evolved in the last 18 months: guessing it’s at least Win2K functional in terms of drivers et al. by now.

Incredibly, the 1/2-terabyte array we put on the LAN in January is already full - mainly with backups. The culprit is me, and my reluctance to delete email. So my MBOX is huge, and changes every day, so the incremental backups (via Apple’s Backup 3.0) are big, and chew up storage pretty quickly. Yesterday I picked up a new Iomega 500 GB NAS drive for what 250 GB cost 6 months ago. I think we’re also going to change our backup strategy
