Breakfast
We spent about a half-hour in Dotcom Garden this morning, first harvesting tomatoes, lemon cucumbers and herbs, then watering, then sitting and drinking fresh, hot, Peet’s coffee from a mini-thermos. Pretty good morning.
Cassie patrolled the paths between the planters while I went about my chores. I’m amazed the planter boxes, made of 2×12 redwood planks […]
Adobe’s Semaphore’s puzzle cracked
Serious geekery - from Wired’s Threat Level blog:
“Mark Snesrud and Bob Mayo took on the public art challenge, leading them to W.A.S.T.E. cash on some fancy radios, find hidden XML files, use computer programs to generate a 4,142 page equation that explained the signals but signified nothing, and finally crack the code to find the […]
Garden 2.0
An anonymous reader left a comment that I should call the new garden web 2.0 garden, and move on from ‘Dotcom.’ That’s probably a good idea: above is a scan of photo of a kitchen garden that graces the headquarters of Sunset Magazine, which just happens to be located here in Menlo Park.
I really like […]
Word processors: yes, there are choices!
Microsoft Word often drives me nuts: it has such a huge feature set that I am often at a loss to type simple letters and memos without those features getting in the way (by auto completing words I don’t want or popping up list managers and formatting that I don’t want either).
So, I’m always on […]
Google Browser resurfaces
Google recently grabbed the domain name gbrowser.com, according to Chris Smith an item also picked up by CNET. Google also has hired well-known browser hacker Michal Zalewski - more grist for the rumor mill. A Google Browser could mean a better experience with Google apps and Docs, but I’d be happy if they would just […]
Interesting morning light
Adobe’s West Tower (left) was bathed in interesting morning light when I walked onto campus yesterday. My normal routine is to pick up a non-fat latte from Adobe’s Almaden Cafe before heading for my office in East Tower, which means traversing the courtyard, above, at the center of Adobe’s 3 high-rise office towers.
All the glass […]
The Shuttle’s replacement: Orion
This artist’s conception shows the Orion spacecraft, foreground, approaching the International Space Station. Orion is remarkably like the Apollo system that took astronauts to the moon almost 40 years ago - it will even be launched from expendable rockets. The avionics will be new, it seats 6 on low earth missions, but does not seem […]
Citrix to buy XenSource for $500M
First VMWare goes IPO, now the open source XenSource is acquired. VM is clearly the wave of the future…
Shuttle tile update
This just in: NASA probably won’t fix the gouge. There’s a risk a spacesuited astronaut could cause more damage by bumping into the tiles while trying to repair the gouge…
How Warren Buffett got where he is
The New York Times’ David Leonhardt reminds us of two Columbia professors named Benjamin Graham and David L. Dodd, and their notion of ‘value investing.’Â Warren Buffett took their class, worked for their firm and then set out to make his billions using their notions. Leonhardt thinks investors today, by focusing on the long term, […]
