Gouged Shuttle tile may be left unrepaired

NASA says that similar gouges have not posed a problem in the past, so they may only fix it if it allows faster turnaround of the Shuttle. I’d hate to have the responsibility for this particular decision…

VMWare IPO surges

Gotta say, $29 for VMWare looked pretty good to me… and sure enough it opened at $56 this morning. Currently trading around $55. Might still be a good deal, but not nearly as good as $29…

The Shuttle tile gouge

Here’s the gouged tiles that are concerning NASA’s Endeavour mission. CNET has a slide show that notes the position of the damage, which is said to go right down to bare aluminum. Endeavour’s mission has been extended, thanks to new Space Station power technology, which suggests they’ll use the time to patch the tiles. [...]

OpenOffice.org’s OS X Aqua beta

…has been running all night on my G5 Mini, so far no problem. The beta has a list of known issues, but basic ‘office’ funcions work. It’s like linking back up with an old friend - in 2004 I wrote a 450 paqge companion to Sun’s Java Desktop System in OOo on Linux (Sun’s JDS). [...]

The Salon Gibson interview

But of course! The interview starts with a quote from Pattern Recognition, noting that ‘now’ once had much greater duration. Amazon! Where’s my copy of Spook Country?

Dotcom Garden’s last hurrah

Dotcom Garden has just been a joy this year: I wish I’d had more time to spend enjoying it. It’s just been one small corner of my life that is relatively ordered, stress-free and pleasant.
Now that our patio re-do is underway, however, we won’t be replanting or otherwise working on Dotcom Garden. Once the patio’s [...]

iLife ‘08

Well, we upgraded to iLife ‘08 and find iPhoto ‘08 works very differently from previously. I can’t seem to find a way to size pictures to the 450, 300 and 225-pixel sizes that fit the www.gulker.com blog body - that used to be an ‘export’ feature. I’m not sure the ‘events’ feature is very useful [...]

Endeavour, teacher aboard, has tile gouge

The Space Shuttle Endeavour apparently has a worrisome gouge in its heat shield, according to an AP report. Teacher/astronaut Barbara Morgan, who had been Christa McAuliffe’s backup on the doomed Challenger mission, is apparently helping to assess the tile damage, documented by the crew of the International Space Station when Endeavour did the now-customary backflip [...]

Equipment failures

So, we’re getting geared up to begin podcasting in a more serious way (like we need something else to do). It is amazing how the prices of things like high-quality microphones, mixers et al have dropped in the past few years or so: a very good mic costs $45, a high-fidelity, low-noise mixer costs $35 [...]

SCO loses

Slashdot and Groklaw point to a key ruling by a Utah Federal Court that SCO doesn’t own the UNIX copyrights - Novell does. All of SCO’s other claims should fall like dominoes in light of this ruling. It’s over, SCO loses… even WSJ has the story…
