In Darwin among the Machines, George B. Dyson predicts that the development of machine intelligence is inevitable, Darwinian and will proceed without human guidance or intervention.
Ray Kurzweil sees an approaching ’singulariy,’ an era in which humans will choose to enhance themselves by adopting non-biological substrates and merging human intelligence with the capacity, speed and knowledge-sharing capacity of machines, as related in his book The Singularity is Near.
In any case, the Singularity Summit this weekend will bring together leading thinkers in robotics, nanotech and artificial intelligence to discuss the topic. Both SFGate.com and CNET have coverage worth a look. The ultimate in ‘open source’ software…?

Microsoft is going after VMWare, according to a Reuters report. Microsoft’s virtualization product, code-named Viridian, is scheduled to go into Windows Server 2008, and slated to ship 6 months after Server 2008 does. The MS ‘hypervisor’ manager is supposed to work with Viridian, VMWare and XenSource… ‘embrace and extend’ tactics?

Spent yesterday afternoon with good friend Gary Fong, former S.F. Chronicle Executive Graphics Editor. Thanks to me looking at a Google Map upside down (this one had South at the top for some reason) we spent an hour finding the Lunch 2.0 venue, during which we talked about Gary’s current project, a photo agency called Genesis that focuses on inspirational and faith-based material (which I happen to think is a really good idea). As I’m working through the job of scanning in my archives, I’ll be on the lookout for material that may be suitable for Genesis…

So, Ubuntu is running OK, but not connecting to the network under Parallels for some reason, even though all the Net settings – DHCP and the gateway – seem to be set OK. Anybody have experience solving this? Guess it wouldn’t be Linux without at least one config problem…
