Here’s the Lumix DMC FZ50 mounted on our lightweight QuantaRay tripod. The Lumix is already a great blogger’s camera IMHO (10.1 megapixel, 35mm to 420mm[!] equivalent focal length) very sharp Leica Vario-Elmar lens in a compact, lightweight package that solves a lot of image capture problems with shake reduction, macro autofocus and other useful features.
This is not quite the equivalent of a Hasselblad on a heavy tripod in the ‘old days’ of film. This is more like a 35mm camera loaded with Plus-X: but that’s good quality in my mind.
If one were to put a $3000 Canon (or the new full-frame Nikon) on this tripod, it would be like a 6×9cm (Or even 4×5 inch) camera on a big, heavy tripod in the film days – you’d get very high res from a relatively lighweight package. I think we’ll be working with this combo for week or so, just to see how it works out…
