My Amazon shopping cart – where I’d pre-ordered Mac OS 10.5 (’Leopard’) – is now showing a ship date of 10/31 with delivery slated for 11/02. Sure enough, the Apple site says ‘arriving in October’ I don’t see any rumors or speculation on the usual Mac sites… wondering what up? Must have missed this…

Yeah: if I remember rightly from Tiger, there’s usually a rumour when it goes gold master, and there’s 4–6 weeks from gold master to shipping.
I haven’t noticed a gold master rumour, so unless they’re keeping very schtum, I’d be sort-of surprised if Leopard shipped in October, as promised.
Maybe they had to switch developers from Leopard again, this time to brick iPhones

Yeah, Steve said back in April that it’d be October—it was originally due for the first half of 2007, and apparently slipped due to work on the iPhone.
I’m still curious why so little buzz….
I think it’s because everyone was a bit underwhelmed by the preview at WWDC. Some of the cosmetic changes (e.g. the dock) have been taken apart (http://furbo.org/2007/07/03/the-hig-still-matters-even-with-special-effects/). After 2 and a half years, the biggest new feature appears to be Time Machine, and I suspect most geeks have a decent back-up system already.
I think traditional PC operating systems are just getting kinda mature. What is there to get excited about?
It does appear to be getting closer to gold master though: http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2007/10/12/apple-issues-internal-leopard-gold-master-candidate-builds
