According to James Kuffner, associate prof at Carnegie Mellon, a robot with 20 or more motors can replicate most human movement. This from an article in today’s NYT Circuits section. The article is about robots, and points out that the robot market – mostly toys at this point, though price points of $1000 are not uncommon – amounts to some $284 million in the U.S. alone. So why do we have all these extra muscles et al.?
