La vie Milwaukeeienne

Friend, former classmate Greg Bird emailed me this sketch of life on the shore of Lake Michigan:
…just went out and bought a 50# bag of sand today for about $2.75 - salt is now at a premium and selling at around 10 bucks for 10# bag. The stuff is poison for this freshwater environment, so here’s to sand and tire chains. Shoveling? It’s just a daily routine - I hardly notice it anymore. (yawn . . .) It was fun knocking down the icecicles today with a long bamboo pole - it probably took a hundred pounds off the gutter, which is frozen solid. The side streets, like ours, and alleys, are packed with ice and a real car suspension test - one might wonder about all those rough pavements at auto test tracks, but not around here.
Needless to say, very different from the Bay Area…
