Big Days, back-to-back
So today we spent the day in San Francisco: working with our physical rehab trainer, working out in the gym at UCSF, getting a chemo infusion and having lunch at Falafil King.
Tomorrow, we’re flying down to Los Angeles for a gathering of the L.A. Herald Examiner staff (it folded - gasp - almost 20 years […]
The iPhone trips
Our iPhone was saying ‘No Service’ rather more often than I’m used to hereabouts, so I called support.
Turns out the time change tripped up a number of iPhones - the cure being to release and reset the SIM card (or whatever it’s called).
Oddly enough the phone made the time change smoothly - some programmer must […]
Birthdays
Birthdays have come to be a bit more precious given current circumstances, but nothing is quite as precious as the image above, that arrived this morning. Thank you, Julie, John and Grace! Yes, today is my birthday…
We try a low-tech fix for our high-tech problem
Trying our best to come up with a fix for the heating problem we’re seeing with our Core Duo Mac Mini and matching LaCie 500 GB hard drive, we reasoned that a piece of aluminum foil might reflect just enough of the Mini’s heat to keep the LaCie from producing its annoying fan noises.
That worked […]
Tech break
So we’re trying to fix a couple of nagging tech issues today. One is a LaCie drive, that despite being returned 3 times, still makes an annoying fan noise. Having pulled out the LaCie and the (Core Duo) Mini it sits under, we discover that the Mini’s underside is discolored from heat (seen above), heat […]
VMWare’s ‘Unity’ feature
So here’s Internet Explorer 7 running side-by-side with Firefox for Mac OS X. This magic is courtesy of the Unity feature in VMWare’s Fusion virtualization software for Mac which puts windows apps in their own window that floats on the Mac desktop, just like an OS X app.
BTW, VMWare has been very stable on my […]
A picture from the Leica
We finally downloaded a couple week’s snaps from the Leica M8. This study of the wonderful oak in our side yard caught my eye. Shot with the Tri-Elmar set to 16mm… a fractal picture, I would say…
Drivers wanted
Speaking of USB devices, DisplayLink will be releasing beta drivers for its USB to DVI video hardware at the end of this month. This means, among other things, that Mac Mini users can set up multiple displays, and MacBook and MacBook Pro users can go beyond the built-in screen plus one limit. Besides making you […]
Today’s MRI
Linda says that once I tell everyone I’m going for a MRI, I should tell them the results. Well, today’s results are as good as a glioma patient could hope for: the tumor is quiescent, not growing and the flair - the area around the tumor and radiation therapy damage - is no more evident […]
Big day at UCSF
Wednesdays are UCSF days - our chemotherapy is on alternate Wednesdays, as is physical rehab. Every 6 weeks we go for a MRI, followed by consults with our neuro-oncologists who then decide what the next course of therapy will be (the normal answer: more chemo).
Today is especially full: I have a 9:30 with physical rehab […]
