The rector of our church, the Rev. Mike Spillane died this morning. Mike was 58 and leaves his wife, Julie and their school-age children Kim and Brendan. My deep sympathies go out to all three. Linda and I really feel a deep connection with Julie and the kids - we know some of what they have been through.
Mike suffered from Glioblastoma, a more aggressive form of the cancer that I have. He was diagnosed last July, and our mutual sickness became a bond. Mike and I used to sit together on a bench outside church after the 10:30 service: I think fellow parishioners thought that Mike was counseling me on deep spiritual matters, but the conversations, in typical Mike fashion, were more like “How’s your back? Mine’s killing me.”
Mike was a fighter with a huge heart, a guy who was both scrappy and caring, a man clearly called to be a priest, and a good one at that. He will be sorely missed…

I found your blog while on the internet. I am the music director at the Church of the Holy Nativity in Meridian, ID where Father Mike was until last spring. I just wanted to offer my condolences and let you know that we feel as you do. He lived just down the street from me and I taught Kim piano lessons until they moved. It was always fun to see him run by as he was quite the jogger. We all miss him terribly but know he is with God singing those Celtic favorites. God bless you all.
