Tuesday musings

Mike Spillane’s passing leaves me very sad, but to be true to his spirit, life, and the blog, must go on. Thusly:

The Pope is visiting the U.S. this week, and I am very interested in learning more about this man and his ideas. I have been a little leery of Benedict, given some of his pronouncements both as Pope and, formerly, the head of Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, (aka the Inquisition in times past). I’m bringing an open mind: the Pope has already spoken out on the sex scandals afflicting many U.S. dioceses.

The diversion of food crops to fuel continues to roil the world’s poor. We’ve written about this previously, and are hopeful that this problem, which is relatively well understood, can be resolved.

Pope update: many abuse victims are unimpressed by the Pope’s comments, saying they want action, not words.

Range voting is a system in which voters assign a score to all candidates (e.g. 7 to Clinton and 3 to Obama) rather than a vote for a single candidate. The system avoids the Al Gore syndrome, where a fringe candidate can split the vote, resulting in the 2nd-most popular candidate winning. From this week’s New Scientist

Consuming food for fuel was John Kerry’s campaign slogan. Electronic voting was going to solve Al Gore’s dangling chad problems. Signing a piece of paper was going to reduce CO2. With today’s media you just don’t know what to think.

See the article “The Year of Two Popes” in the website Atlantic.com. It’s a long backgrounder on Cardinal Ratzinger’s accession to become the current Pope.
