What about our 6 million iPhone 1.0s…?

So my $400 iPhone has just been rendered ancienne by the newr, faster, half-price iPhone 2… even by Silicon Valley standards, this is a jolt, and probably not great marketing by Apple (but more about this later). I’m starting to be afraid to buy anything Apple lest a half-price, better, faster version show up a few weeks from now. Just wondering how long I have until the 8-core Mac Pro gets doused…

I get the impression that’s it’s only half price because the phone networks are subsidising the cost (instead of giving Apple a share of the contract revenue). So it’s sort of the same cost as it’s always been.
I think it’s also worth remembering that 8 months after the first iPod came out, you could get one with twice the capacity, and a touch-sensitive scroll wheel, for less money. All part of being an early adopter: paying more for version 1 technology.
I paid £269 for my iPhone last November, because I felt it was worth £269. I still do. I’m looking forward to getting a future iPhone that’s better and cheaper (I’m holding out for 32 GB), but I don’t regret my v1.
Luckily, Nebraska does not offer 3G, so I’m feeling a tiny bit less pressure to upgrade my edge-y little 8 gig’er.
Here’s hoping the software upgrade–which is still largely mysterious, unless I’m just looking in the wrong places–will offer up some goodies for those of us sticking with 1.0.
It isn’t the gadget you pay for, but being part of the story.
I’m still annoyed (not quite angry anymore) about the $100 ADB mouse I had to buy for my Mac SE back in 1990 (still in college, it was big bucks!).
The mouse flipped out about 4 months after buying the system, Apple had a 90 day warranty on all their products, and they changed to the industry standard one-year warranty a scant six months later.
And yes, I do still like to tell the story.
Paul - good point about the phone… it’s hard to live without one these days, and when you need one (as I did when my Treo died 5 months ago), you get the best option you can afford. Like you, I still like my iPhone, will enjoy the 2.0 software and we’ll see what happens.
Anne - software’s coming July 11, to apple.com…
