Monetizing culture

Some unexpected delays in San Francisco curbed our Stanford Summit plans today, but two of the participating companies that pinged me and caught my attention, are both in the second wave of social networking. With Facebook and MySpace well established as the way many choose to interact with the net, there are opportunities both to ride on top of existing social networks and to fill unserved niches.
Two such companies are pitching at Stanford Summit:
Wyndstorm provides development services and software to companies that want to tapĀ social networking and related phenomenon like games. Wyndstorm makes a widget, Socialframes, that allows connecting a web site into related social networks, forums and other sites using a ‘2.5D rooms’ metaphor.
hi5 Networks focuses on culturally-sensitive social networking - 80% of its more than 56 million visitors in June came from outside the U.S. hi5 says they go beyond translation to true cultural localization. We will be prowling the conference tomorrow, hopefully providing live updates and maybe a podcast or two…
