Sunday evening in Berkeley

Jamest Taylor at the Greek Theatre, UC Berkely

Daughter-in-law Julie Getze and I attended the James Taylor concert at the Greek Theater at UC Berkeley last night, the tickets being a joint birthday gift to us both from spouse and stepson. Julie hadn’t been born when Taylor’s ‘Fire and Rain’ and ‘Sweet Baby James’ were hits on those groovy ‘underground’ FM stations in the late 60s, but grew up listening to her parents’ music collection. While the crowd was decidedly graying, there were a surprising number of 20-somethings like Julie.

I had a great time explaining Taylor’s between-song patter to Julie: the roles of people like Glen Campbell (not so cool) and Carole King (very cool) in 60s teenager culture, and  the reference to a bar called the Troubador (very, very cool) in L.A. (Taylor described the place as ‘a ditch’) which I frequented in my college years. Only regret was that, in the intervening months, the wedding of Zach Levy, son of dear friends Terye and Jacob, had been scheduled for the same evening… Mazal tov, Zach and Marla!

    Chris- We missed you at the wedding.Enjoyed seeing Linda. I understand how great James Taylor is. They are trying to get him for the summer symphony at Stanford next summer. Hope you are doing well
