Mystery computer

While fiddling with our firewall last night, I noticed that it showed 5 devices connected. That’s odd, I thought, since I only have 4 computers on the LAN. I looked around the family room, but no dice. We have 2 Mac Minis, 2 Mac towers, and that’s it… there’s an elderly G3 Powerbook in the kitchen, but it’s on the guest wireless network which is ’sandboxed’ off from the LAN.
Mystery computer, which has a fixed IP unlike the rest of the LAN machines, shows the default Apache homepage when contacted via http. It doesn’t respond to telnet, but it does respond to ssh, though I have no idea what the password is. I just checked the garage, which used to have a rack of servers, but those machines were turned off long ago. I’m stumped…

[…] Honest, I cannot find the mystery computer: I can see it on the LAN (ping times are sub-millisecond), but I cannot find the physical machine after much digging around the premises. I checked both our Intel Macs (a Mini and the Mac Pro) to make sure they weren’t running an instance of Linux or Windows under VM (VMWare in our case), I checked for dual network interfaces (Mac Pro has 2, but only one is connected/configured) but nope, no dice. Where is this thing!!!? […]
