A number of kind readers made suggestions for finding my Mystery Computer, and, as I proceeded to follow the proffered advice, I did indeed discover the Mystery Machine: an Apple Time Capsule, a wired/wireless networked storage device, which has, of course, an IP address.
The twist was that I assumed that the 4 DHCP devices on my routers ‘connected devices’ list were our 4 Macs: in fact it turned out that 3 of the Macs and the Time Capsule were on DHCP. Our long-serving Mac Mini had a fixed IP address, artifact of a long-gone LAN arrangement (I hesitate to describe it as ‘architecture.’) I just assumed that the odd man out was the fixed IP, but it was the Mini, which, of course runs Apache, and, as it happens, had ssh running as well. The root of the mystery was my foggy memory…
