Days of sad news

We spent Saturday in Potter Valley, attending the memorial service for our cousin Kelly, who died after a bout with pancreatic cancer. It was a real-deal small-town event: everybody in town was there. Someone donated a steer, more neighbors barbecued it and others brought dozens of side dishes to feed the 500 or so people. The fire department brought folding chairs and tables.

We were hardly home when news arrived that our dear friend Priscilla Graham died yesterday. Pris had been a surogate mom to me during some rocky teenage years - our thoughts and prayers are with daughter Timmie (who cared for Pris these last 12 years) and son Jimmy, who was a high-school chum and freshman-year college roommate. Pris famously recruited me to campaign against an ill-sited building at Western Reserve Academy, a fight she won largely by virtue of her grit and charm. She will be missed…

We too were sorry to hear of Pris’s death. She was one of those feisty “grande dames” of Hudson who were the true grit of the town.
