Anthony Armstrong-Jones, aka Lord Snowdon, as he appeared when I photographed him in the lunchroom of the Macy’s near downtown Los Angeles in the early 80s. I think of him as a quintessential 60’s London photographer. Indeed, I tried unsuccessfully to get a job in his London studio in 1970 when I was 19. When he wasn’t sitting for me, he was off photographing the likes of Clint Eastwood.
This photo was made on Tri-X Pan film ‘pushed’ to ASA (ISO) 1600 – basically a 2-stop underexposure that is compensated for by prolonging development time. In those days I used straight Kodak D-76 developer to push film. You can see the grain (yay!) and contrast that are common in ‘pushed’ images. Lens was likely a 105mm f2.5 Nikkor, wide open, with a shutter speed of 1/125th second.
The Wikipedia article on Mr. Armstrong-Jones has a rather old photo of him, so I thought I would do my civic duty and upload this image – which turns out to be pretty hard to do. We have a couple more photogs to contribute here… then off on a new project, tentatively titled ‘Witness’…
