Linda collected me from the 7 AM flight from DFW, which, given the 2-hour time difference meant we could make the 10:30 service and the ensuing Confirm-not-Conform class at Trinity – 3 hours at church after a nearly 4-hour flight.
Recall that I’ve been at a conference for Christian photojournalists at a Baptist seminary, and you might wonder if that would be making me cranky. But, no, the conference was not at all what I had expected.
First off, I wasn’t sure what kind of welcome a liberal Episcopalian from San Francisco was going to receive at a Baptist stronghold in central Texas. But my friend, Gary Fong, told me everything would be alright, and just to come. I really like Gary, so I did.
I wasn’t ten yards inside the 100-year-old seminary’s very large and modern conference facility when a woman came up and greeted me. She gave me her name and asked me who I was and where I was from, with genuine interest. She wasn’t an official greeter – just another conference attendee. This continued all weekend – everyone from the conference speakers to the wait-staff greeted me warmly and sincerely, without apparent prejudice, and that’s not half the story. Amazing, more TK… been up since 2 AM SF time…
