Walking on the Mississipi levee this morning, we bumped into a lone saxophonist who goes by the moniker ‘Dr. Saxtrum,’ who also plays, rather expertly, the trumpet. Listen to his rendition of St James Infirmary – be sure to find him on the levee behind Cafe du Monde and pick up his CD.
Linda and he struck up a conversation, and it turned out he had lived in San Francisco in the 60s and 70s, playing in North Beach clubs. We chatted on for a bit, I snapped a few shots of his beautiful old trumpet, and then we set off. He warned us about a scam artist we would be passing on our way up the levee (aka the Moonwalk) to the Algiers ferry.
Sure enough the scammer pounced, but chose two men walking the other way, rather than us. “I will bet you $20 I can tell you the city and state where you got your shoes…’
