As we were preparing luncheon today (sliced chicken breast, tomato and mayonnaise on flax seed bread), we noticed that our heirloom tomato slice has structures not unlike those revealed in yesterday’s MRI of my brain.

Nature is known to have converged on certain structures that are seen in many different domains. Physics and biology provide the constraints and evolutionary competition does the rest. Complexity scientist, biologist Stuart Kauffman alludes to this natural balancing act in his book Reinventing the Sacred.

The brain is actually too soft to slice very satisfactorily on its own: anatomists in the 19th century learned how to fix it with chemicals so they could slice it cleanly and study its many structures. Unfixed, the brain has the consistency of cottage cheese… 1:51:52 PM
