We awoke this morning, on the 7th floor of the Hotel Vitale, on San Francisco’s Embarcadero to witness a column of black smoke rising from the upper deck of the Bay Bridge, which structure dominates the view from that spot. The passengers of the burning vehicle appear to have escaped and made their way a safe distance down the bridge before one or another East Bay fire department arrived and quickly knocked down the flames. I didn’t move from my seat by the window – ‘armchair photojournalism’…
Later in the morning, we went to SFMOMA for a triple bill – Richard Avedon, Ansel Adams and Robert Frank. I naturally was in photog heaven, marveling at Avedon’s and Adam’s prints from 8×10-inch negatives, and Frank’s seminal, photography-changing portrait of us Americans.
Last night we went to the Giants game where we were treated to a rainbow and a win, even though starter, All-Star pitcher Matt Cain was knocked out in the 2nd inning by a line drive to his forearm.
After the game we dined at RN74, a new restaurant in the Millennium Tower, one of the big high-rises that is changing the face of San Francisco. The restaurant, named after the road that runs through Burgundy (in France it’s just the N74), has an amazing wine list, heavy on Pinot Noirs from Burgundy and elsewhere and a decor that recalls European train stations of the last 40 years or so.
Food is very good, if not at the highest Bay Area notch, and the wine list, especially the Market List (100 wines under $100) is unbelievable. Service was responsive, including promptly returning lukewarm entree dishes. Dog and beer at ATT&T park, Cassoulet and Burgundy at RN74…
