Cancer and chemo
Saturday was a bit rough: it was just one of those random cancer days where I was weaker, wobblier and more out-of-sorts than usual. Many cancer patients have noted this - cancer just throws you curves some days - as have I. Felt better this AM, and was off to church for a very nice [...]
Health logs
So, one of my projects hs been to move my health logs from paper to a spreadsheet, in this case Apple’s ‘Numbers‘ app in iWork ‘08. At the moment I’m just collecting the data from various notes and sources, but I’m hoping eventually to build some math into the spreadsheet that will result in nice, [...]
Full day…
We spent the whole morning up at UCSF doing rehab therapy and chemo. Physical therapist Heidi Engel put us through the usual neuro-muscular wringer, and spent time preparing me for the next 6 months or so of rehab. I may well be able to get out of steroid hell (if the brain edema is [...]
Fall colors come to Menlo
The leaves hereabouts are just starting to turn colors, as Linda points out in her First Blush post this morning. She, I and Cassie made what was, for me, about a 30-minute circuit of the neighborhood where I tried hard to make my wobbly leg walk correctly without using the right side to compensate for [...]
Up and at ‘em…
So, we decided to get a bunch of chores done this AM. Fixed Linda breakfast (eggs scrambled with spinach and feta) in between her jog and rush out to a baby shower in Danville for Julie and Grace, vacuumed out the garage, cleaned up the patio (our aging Aussie has yet to learn the bricks [...]
Light and shadow
The late afternoon sun provided some interesting light and shadow as I made my way to the Menlo Park hardware store yesterday afternoon after a medical appointment. I’m starting to attempt short walks - 3 blocks in this case - thanks to the strength and mobility workouts…
Hard at work at rehab
Friend Mike Podell was gracious and kind enough to take me up to UCSF’s Milberry Center for my weekly workout with trainer Heidi Engel. Here Heidi’s guiding me on something called a Bosu, a partially inflated half-sphere that allows me to work to strengthen - and coordinate - my leg muscles. Heidi really put me [...]
Dinner with the Gulkers
So, one of the things I used to enjoy was preparing dinner parties with friends where I would play amateur chef, and spend the better part of a day prepping, cooking and otherwise getting a fun dinner together.
Since cancer, chemo, steroid myopathy et al. have become my norm, I don’t have the stamina or strength [...]
Feeling good
We slept in this morning, and got up feeling pretty good. We’re walking as well as we have in a long time - pretty gimpy by able-bodied standards, but good for me compared to what it’s been like the last couple months.
We’re continuing to ramp down the steroids - we were at 16mg a day [...]
At the King of Falafil
Friend and fellow Oxy Alum Dr. Stuart Rosenberg joined Linda and I for lunch at the King of Falafil - one of the best falafel dives we’ve encountered in the U.S. - situated near UCSF’s Osher and Mount Zion Centers.
Stuart’s offices are nearby, and my chemo and physical training session times worked into his very [...]
