WordPress’ forbidden word

For some strange reason, if a post contains the word *nion (as in labor *nion, state of the *nion, class re*nion), WordPress reports a 403 error. I’ve Googled this, searched the WordPress docs with nary a clue. Anyone?

The City of Angels

We’re back from L.A., where we had an awful lot of fun. We could have blogged from there via the iPhone had I managed to remember the correct string to get to WordPress’ post function. The Herald Examiner gathering was great, and I caught up with dozens of old colleagues. The icing on the cake […]

Big Days, back-to-back

So today we spent the day in San Francisco: working with our physical rehab trainer, working out in the gym at UCSF, getting a chemo infusion and having lunch at Falafil King.
Tomorrow, we’re flying down to Los Angeles for a gathering of the L.A. Herald Examiner staff (it folded - gasp - almost 20 years […]

Time to move on…

As much as I love the photo of Julie, John and Grace sitting at the top of the blog (below), it is the mission of a weblog to update frequently. So, on we go…

Finding time to blog…

…is tough. So far today we’ve done our killer physical rehab exercise, proofed and dropped off the liturgy for granddaughter Grace’s baptism at Kinko’s (Lord, help us), seen our shrink and dry cleaner, Debbie, walked for 20+ minutes, dealt with some confusing insurance papers, renewed a domain name, folded the wash, called around trying to […]

A real wintery day

Friend and former classmate Kevin McKean offers this:
“Thought you might enjoy the view from our back deck overlooking a parking lot and the Hudson Palisades from the village of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. ”
The second weather report from a former classmate: I hereby invite all former classmates to forward their weather in words and pictures…

Back to the blog…

So we’ve been off the air since Tuesday. Gotta say, being ‘retired’ is exhausting, and I’ve been busy as heck for the last couple of days. Won’t bore you with the details, but a new commitment to walking for 40 minutes every day (on top of our A.M. exercise regimen), the usual household chores, shopping […]

Blogging (well, writing) then and now

Herbert Spencer (1820 - 1903) wrote every day for fifty years. He created a ‘bookshelf’ of titles on cultural evolution according to Rodney Stark in his book Discovering God, and was the originator of the Ghost Theory of primitive religion ’spelled out and illustrated in massive detail.’
Spencer’s theory was eventually dismissed as ‘nonsense’ by scholars. […]

In the beginning was the command line…

We’ve spent sme time while trying to fix our domain woes on the old-fashioned command  line grace a Apple’s Terminal program, which brings a bash shell to Mac OS X. Since it’s *NIX under the hood, you can do just about anything…

And while we were waiting…

for gulker.com to come back, we realized, looking at the creation date for the domain (January 20, 1995) that we have just passed the 18th anniversary of www.gulker.com - we were live on a modem link and IP address before we registered the domain - ahh, the good old days.
Anyway, things we’ve been thinking about […]
